The university celebrates its 142nd birthday this year. With the goal of fostering traditions, the university has revived several existing ones and created new ones, including Lighting of the Quads and Fall Fest.

Commemoration Day has been the quintessential tradition of the university since 1877, when Daniel Coit Gilman, in agreement with the original trustees, declared that "the 22nd of February, 1877, will be observed as an Anniversary Holiday in the Johns Hopkins University." This year, the university will be celebrating Commemoration Day with a ball on Monday, Feb. 19, at the Engineers Club. The night will be dedicated to celebrating the university's past, examining the present, and reflecting on its future.
